This Penn combo is great, however, Amazon ships rod and reel combos loose without a bag or box. Item was received damaged from shipping, replacement was damaged also. Both returned. Buy this item locally or from Penn direct, they ship it in a box.

Product:Penn is always going to be hard to beat, even with their older models. The quality of the reel for this price (even including the rod) is well worth it. I bought this setup for surf fishing specifically to catch Bull Reds and of course loads of sharks that come with the SC territory.The first time using this setup, I was able to bring in 2 monster Bulls, 6 small sharks, and a catfish within two hours. I lined the reel with 40lb Braid and had absolutely no fear of the line snapping or the reel not being able to handle heavy fish. Given the water action, I was throwing a 4oz pyramid weight.Seller:Prior to purchasing, I was reading a lot of negative comments about the packaging. It seems many people have had to order replacements, which is never fun. My order came in one piece, but was by no means packaged super thoughtfully. I Ordered hoping it would come unbroken and gave the seller the benefit of the doubt.*To the seller: I highly recommend at least using some foam wrapping around the rods when placing in the boxes. This would lessen the probability of shipping related issues and save you some harsh reviews!Overall, great product.

I want to get into surf fishing and i was looking forward to this rod, but, out of wishful thinking, i disregarded the reviews that mention the fact that these rods are never shipped in boxes and usually come damaged, and, to my disappointment, the rod came with bent guide rings and now I’m disappointed. It looks amazing and it feels like a solid rod but i’m disappointed with how it’s shipped.

The media could not be loaded. Guaranteed this pole makes it's way onto the boat or in the car for every single fishing trip I go on!!! I purchased the 7', medium fast rod and it can literally do it all (inshore, offshore, boat, surf). The graphite composite rod is lightweight for all day use in the ocean and does not exhaust my arms, but still heavy and strong to pull in a 15 lb fish. My typical use is in the bay for fluking and it works great! I am always bringing home some dinner for the family!! The full metal body reel is incredibly smooth with carbon fiber drag washers. Be sure you rinse it throughly with fresh water after returning to the dock as the saltwater will cause corrosion if left to sit.I have purchased a number of more expensive rod and reel combos that are not nearly as good quality as this Penn III for the price. You will not be disappointed in the durability, versatility and ability to reel in the biggest catch in your group! Worth the money a hundred times over and will absolutely be buying another to add to my collection soon. The cork handle is a wonderful addition for added comfort and grip, plus it looks really nice!

The Reel is Awesome, but the pole has a VERY long butt.

Just returned the same rod I ordered earlier due to damage because it was shipped in a plastic sleeve, this combo was wrapped and cardboard protection on the rod plus the long box, solid rod with straight guides and the reel is sturdy and smooth

I almost didn’t purchase this rod/reel because of all the bad reviews in relation to it not being boxed during shipping. I’m glad I went ahead and took the chance because it did in fact come boxed and on time. Great purchase, everything was perfect shipping wise. Haven’t got to the beach yet to put it to use but I’m glad Amazon gave me a great start by getting me a quality product

Caught a 40lb and a 25lb amber Jack slow pitch jigging with this outfit. I was the only one out of 3 to catch fish. Would highly recommend. The rod was bent in a tight U and didn’t break.

Overall i’m super happy with this rod/reel combo. Compared to my last rod this one is substantially lighter, making long sessions easy on the arms and back. Plus, the reel holds up well to water given the sealed bearings, which means I’ve had to do very little maintenance.The drag system has an extremely satisfying and quality “ding” to it, which adds to the experience when fighting a fish.The only major downside is that the three rod sections come apart somewhat too easily. I’ve flung off half my rod during a cast on most sessions, and recently lost a nice lure because it snapped my line when the sections came apart. I suggest taping sections together with electrical tape or something of the sorts.It also doesn’t appear to have indicator dots where sections connect to show you’ve got your sections properly aligned - you have to eyeball it. I find if a section is a little crooked you can feel it while reeling, but it can be hard to see how it’s out of line.In general, it’s great value for money and genuinely high quality. I’ve caught 43 striped bass on it already this season with 50lb braided line! It also comes with a convenient and really nice travel case as a great bonus as well as a second spool.
