The Hudson River School: Nature and the AmericanVision

Having recently rediscovered Albert Bierstadt, it is mind blowing for me what this man accomplished in his lifetime (1835-1902). He basically painted everything he saw while the West was being trail-blazed and had so much influence in history, conservation and humanitarianism. Sounds like we could all take a lesson from A. Bierstadt on preservation rather than annihilation (because as I write this, the entire town of Lake Tahoe may soon be burned to the ground if they cannot stop the wildfires racing towards it). Guess each and everyone of us make a difference after all. Anyway, it's a great book and a nice escape from our out of control world of today.

The Vero Beach Museum of Art had this show, but was out of the books -- and I wanted one so badly as it was just before Mother's Day. I was worried the Amazon version would be of lesser quality than the sample I had seen in the museum -- I've gotten a couple of dud books from here with wobbly printing, but this one was PERFECT and so beautiful. A great keepsake and gift -- my mom LOVES it!

Beautifully printed, nice narrative descriptions accompanying the works of art. Nice addition to an art history library or for a gift. Would buy again.

This book is very well designed especially for those who like the painters of the "Hudson River School" or those who want to experience these magnificent landscape painters who know so well express the light.The format of this book called for "Italian" (oblong) seems particularly appropriate to reflect the atmosphere of these paintings.There are many excellent color reproductions, and this book can also be a great complement for the person who dispsoe already a few books on these artists.The quality price ratio should appeal to all those who simply love the beautiful landscape of classical painting and wish to have an overview of these painters.In other words, a gift to yourself for fun or for relatives who will marvel at the masters of the landscape.Note that several works by Thomas Cole, founder of the "Hudson River School," present in this book, we seem remarkably well reflect the descriptions of places of the famous "The Lord of the Ring" by J.R.R Tolkien !

I was looking for a detailed overview of the artists of the Hudson River School.This was just what I wanted. It starts in New York and goes up the river in location andforward in history. Eventually going beyond the Hudson to the West and South America.A lot of the understanding of art comes from the history context. This book had an excellentblend of both. Very helpful to understand the motivations and meanings. It put this genrein context with the other movements in the 19th century. It also lead me into purchasingdeeper monographs on the artists that I liked.

I recently went to the Crystal Bridges Art Museum in Bentonville, Arkansas and visited a show they had on the Hudson River School. Many of the paintings in this book were in the show. The book is great but the show was, of course, better. The book has great copies of the paintings but to see them in person is spectacular. I have really enjoyed the book's history of the movement and all the details and interesting twists and turns it reveals. If you like American Art, which I do, you will love this book. If you haven't been to Crystal Bridges American Art Museum, you must go!

Met expectations. Well-written, and richly illustrated. Very educational.

I purchased this because I wanted a book about the New-York Historical Society and its colleciton. The text about the Hudson River School was interesting and different from other books I have. Plenty of high quality color illustrations.

This is what makes life meaningful, that which gives purpose and direction to life, the most sincere affirmation and uplifting of all that is right. Beauty.

I have always been in love love with the Hudson River School and am counting the days until I can own another book on this topic that I see Amazon also carries.

Descubrí a Tomas Cole hace 17 años y tirando del hilo llegué a la Escuela del Rio Hudson (en Europa se asemeja con el iluminismo). Entre los diversos libros existentes finalmente me decidí por este.Todavía no lo he ojeado en profundidad pero tiene buenas reproducciones que creo que le hacen merecer la pena.
