Well I definitely like the mild scent of straw from the mat. It has a tight, sturdy weave but the fact it appears to be made of grass or something makes me feel like it's probably not able to take much abuse simply because grass has never struck me as durable. I like how it looks and it have a very mild green tint but that will age out. I'm going to use it to put a shikibuton over (All the other tatami mats were real expensive), there's actually a 3 inch discrepancy in length but the mat and the bed are both longer than me. I'm 5 ft 2 in so I'll just fold over the end of the shikibuton and use it as a built in pillow to take care of the discrepancy.I think rather than a rubberized pad on the bottom, I'll use those rug grips to keep the mat in place, when I put it on the ground it was very shifty. Right now it's rolled up in the closet though since It's supposed to have a bed on top of it.

REVISED - I read somewhere that these mats often have a smell and can even grow a layer of “mold”(!) when they are first used but if you lay them in the sun, it will burn off and be fine going forward. So I bought another and it has been perfect! Now I just have to replace the one I threw out. 😢 It is a great, really well made mat. Revising my review - I highly recommend this product. ORIGINAL REVIEW - This mat was the perfect size so I didn't mind spending a bit more than I had hoped for it but once it arrived it smelled like a wet dog. After three months it still smelled even though it was rolled up and layed in the sun to dry out the smell. Two weeks after last using it, and rolling it up completely dry, I found it completely covered in a fuzzy layer of mold. I would not recommend this product.

Arrived today. I'm pleased with it. Nice, good size. I put it on the floor in front of my couch so I can sit on it and eat at the coffee table, Japanese-ish style. :) It does indeed have a greenish color but I don't mind that at all. Doesn't seem to have much of a smell unless you stick your nose right on it. Some people have sensitive noses I guess. I like the smell of freshly made natural materials so it wouldn't bother me if I could smell it. Happy with the purchase, may buy another. Much nicer to sit on than the throw rug I was sitting on.

It's a good mat for my twin-sized shikibuton that protects from hash carpet imprints on the foam. I just wish that it was a tad bit longer.I am not a fan of the price though. Definitely try to get it when it is on sale. But don't buy this if you are expecting to use it as a yoga mat, as that is not its intended purpose.Other reviews comment about the smell when it first arrives. It is the natural smell of the fibers that it's made of. Mine did not arrive with a particularly strong odor. It was very faint and faded very quickly. I did not even have to air it out in the sun at all. Personally, I like that smell; it is a very natural fragrance.

Like many people mentioned, it is greener than expected. I was able to hide this by switching to a warmer light in my room, but that's not an option for everyone. I am going for an Asian theme in my bedroom, and this fit in perfectly. It gets the tatami feel without actually putting the tatami mats in. I recommend you get something to keep it from sliding around though. I've had it for about a month now, and was even able to vacuum it with no problem.Overall I recommend it and am happy with my purchase.

I would like to address some of the issues I read before ordering.Smell- Mind didn't have a noticeable smell good, or bad.Color- Mine appears tan with a slight green tint. I was expecting this. It will fade from the sun. To me it means it wasn't sitting around a warehouse for years.Quality- Seems high for the cost.On the bad side, and this isn't with the product. If you have hardwood floors it might be a trip hazard. We solved this with putting a rubber cabinet lining material underneath.

I just got mine in the mail today & am very pleased with it. I was looking for a cheaper alternative to a tatami mat & this is perfect. The mat is very well made with a tight weave. It has a pleasant grassy odor (like an authentic tatami mat should have), and feels nice under my bare feet. It makes a great light summer rug. The shipping was prompt & very reasonable price wise. Highly recommended. Now that I've seen it in person I'm probably going to buy a few more.
