Beautiful, Smart, Provocative: The History of Contemporary Fashion Imagery
This is one of the most beautiful books I have ever seen. It is the collected works of Fabien Baron considered by many to be the most influential art and creative director in the fashion, advertising, and media worlds since Alexander Liberman and Alexey Brodovitch. Even if the subject matter didn't interest me, but of course it does, I would want this book because it is so finely designed and produced--by Baron of course. In addition to magazine work, ad campaigns for Calvin Klein among others, he has designed over 100 books. This is his first book, a career retrospective, about his own work, including his own exquisite photography, a book he's designed with great care. The lengthy and informative introduction by The New Yorker author Adam Gopnik and the foreword by Kate Moss are also tremendous contributions to this wonderful book and gift.

Beautiful elegance.
Absolute timeless elegance. But ironically I didn’t like the cover. Hmmm. I recall there’s a saying about that somewhere

The Beautiful Room is Empty
The images are beautiful of course - Fabien Baron's work transforming Harpers Baazzar with Liz Tilberis still resonate. To see what that magazine has become is all the more depressing when you are reminded how perfect a thing it was for a moment. & as beautifully realized as the book is (thought the book should have been designed slipcovered) - the overall feeling is of something a bit empty. Page after page of perfectly art directed photographs & graphic design - with no context: Supporting text would have helped - as a catalog of images its lovely even if a bit monotonous, but as a way into understanding the creative work of Fabien Baron & his studio - how it's achieved & his process - it leaves too much left unsaid. If the the idea was a book of images that somehow tell a story it fails - even though divided into somewhat ambiguously titled sections. The work needs context - though beautiful - it is really simply ephemera - commercial work developed for a specific vehicle - mostly magazine work - without the architecture of the magazine surrounding the work, it seems less startling, less moving, less unique "The beautiful room is empty."
