Q: can this fit 42 waist or 44

Go off of your weight when selecting the size. The pants waist is elastic and should fit a 42-44 just fine.

Q: What is the material like? Would these be too odd-ball for lifting at the gym? Yoga?

I would describe the material to be similar to jeans and would think they would be fine for use at the gym or for yoga. The only thing I would consider as "odd-ball" is there is a tag on the front (which you can see in the the picture) and the bottoms don't have as much taper at the ankle as other karate pants.

It depends on how your weight fluxuates over the year. If you range between a 42/44 I would suggest a size 7. But if your range between 44/46 I suggest a size 8.

I am 5'8 but that doesnt matter because they are pretty long and I will have to get them hemmed at a tailor. Size 5 is perfect waist for my weight which moves around a lot between 210 - 220.
