Gives a sense of security
I have used this to help with setting my anchor alarm app while boating. The anchor alarm is to help determine if the anchor is dragging from the point where we set the anchor. The app needs a distance to anchor, and what direction the anchor is from the boat at time of setting the alarm. I know the distance to anchor based on how much rode I've let out. I use this compass to determine the heading to the anchor. It really makes it easy.

Difficult to read
Difficult to read( too small), flimsy, poorly constructed. Would not buy again.

Five Stars
Works great and outstanding at taking bearings offshore. Highly recommend and super price.

Plastic sight targets are vulnerable to breakage
Found that while it may work acceptably, the plastic sighting targets are easy to shear off in a boating environment and that eliminates much of the accuracy and usefulness of the compass. If you can baby it and not put it at risk of breakage, it'll do fine. If you're sailing and needing to find it at night or in a moving environment, sooner or later the clear plastic will shear off somehow.

The perfect tool for near shore navigation

Very hand as a bearing compass
I found this hand bearing compass pretty handy. I'm not too thrilled about the plastic sights, but they seem to be holding up well thru all of my man-handling in my "captain's box", a box where I keep all of my gear (extra GPS, VHF, horn, flares...stuff I want near my helm station), in preparation for a sail on our catamaran. I've had to use it twice as to ensure that a fellow mariner wasn't on a collision course, but he was. I tried our radio, but no joy there, but he did respond to my horn ;-). All in all, I'm happy with this handy instrment and hope that it lasts for many years.

Handheld Compass used with the Star Finder 2102-D system
I use the 2102-D Star-Finder system to identify Celestial objects that I will observe with my Sextant. The Handheld Compass then helps me identify the approximate azimuth of an object that I wish to observe with my Sextant, in the process of determining our latitude and longitude.

Product was defective
The compass card wasn't centered on the center pin. Thus, the compass card can't rotate, rendering the product useless. Got a replacement compass the next day. Same problem. Compass card won't turn on the center pin. Returned for a refund.

Do not buy.
Compass mechanism that sits in oil got stuck the very first time I took it sailing to get some bearings. Do not buy.
