Thrills Under Water

Willard Price never fails to entertain and supply a well spring of information about a variety of species and experiences had by Hal and Roger Hunt. Exciting, entertaining, a perfect read for at least ages 8 and up; my 7 year old grandson loves me reading the Willard Price Adventure stories to him. Highly recommend

Love the Adventure Series

We were just introduced to the Adventure series and immediately fell in love with it. Full of action and adventure, clean and for the most part factual. Our only regret is that Amazon does not carry the whole series for the Kindle.

Underwater and Safari Adventures (The Adventure Series)

I read this when I was a young kid and loved it, it was nice to reread it as an adult and to see how much the world has changed. It is a great adventure for a young reader.

it's not for a 5 year old and is fine for a 11 year old

I really enjoyed it with the bad guys getting caught and took some time to think about who was the villain and it's got real adventure

Non-politically correct, joyous, gorgeous writing from a bygone era. Utter quality.

I just discovered this series on the reading list of a top private boys school in London and I can see why it was there. This is non politically correct (thank heavens) writing in a style which reminds me of a very edgy Enid Blyton (who I love too). Price's story here (it is our first one; I have bought or borrowed almost all the rest for our 7 year old son) is erudite and meticulously researched (as were Blyton's nature books, for example). They seem to draw, in this story, much from the writings and research of Jacques Cousteau and the Oceanographic Institute in the US. There is incredible detail about what then were new technologies in diving - the aqualung and submersibles - Price gives us all the detail and the historical background - rather like Blyton often did with animals and birds. It is something I have never seen in modern fiction. With that is tremendous and closely observed detail on animal behaviour - detail only delivered by David Attenborough in bygone days. I didn't know, for example, that clown fish bring worms to an octopus, allow it to digest the worm and then go into its stomach, unharmed, to eat its share of digested worm - a perfect example of symbiosis. I didn't know that sharks, being short-sighted, are often attracted by the soles of divers' feet which are lighter than their bodies and so look like fish - so divers of old would often wrap their feet in black cloth. There is so much more - every paragraph has incredible information. And it is unashamed - no watering down of detail or trying to make it tabloid or jokey because teachers these days lack the confidence in the facts alone to be interesting. Price wrote his stories a long time ago and he didn't think that children were too stupid or too distracted to find genuine facts interesting - thank heavens. Blyton thought the same. On top of all of this is no-holds barred adventure - the sort of adventure stories that boys and girls used to get - with real baddies and real courage. No pussyfooting or health and safety obsessions or psychoanalysis of the bad guys. Just those with courage and morality fighting against those without. Again, Blyton did the same with her stories. For those wingeing on about ecological issues and animal rights, there is more than enough flabby, politically correct writing to steer you away from these gems. These stories are from an era of real exploration and adventure, when more was learned and conveyed through writing than in any fiction today. These are from a time when animals were studied and respected - not guilt objects for every poor schoolchild who is now falsely led to believe that every animal is under threat and every part of the world endangered. In the times of these stories, children did not look upon the world as either a threat or needing to be saved. They were not trained to feel guilty about the world and man's role. They just looked at the world with enormous interest based on the facts - and accepted our place in it. Those who read this series will be reminded of a time when honesty and courage and adventure - particularly for boys who now have such a demeaned position in this new feminist world - were admired and celebrated. I for one - a mother - think that that our values now are all wrong. And we only have to look at the behaviour of people now - women especially - to know that something profound has been lost.

Wonderful nostalgia

"Underwater Adventure" was the first "real" book I ever read. My parents were dispairing of me and my lack of interest in reading, and knowing of my fascination with all things underwater, gave me this book while on holiday. I started it, and have never looked back. There was a whole set of Hal and Roger adventure books, and I devoured them all. I guess I owe nod of gratitude for my love of fiction reading, in some small degree, to Willard Price! If you have a reluctant boy reader (I think I was about 11 at the time), find the most appropriate Hal and Roger book, and they'll be off!Almost 40 years later, my fascination with all things underwater continues. May I suggest a look at where this fascination has taken me in recent years, in this eBook:- Adventures Underwater - 10 watery tales of excitement under the sea to whet your appetite for your own travel adventures

Exciting story with interesting animal facts and a great villain

The first twelve Adventure stories (Amazon Adventure to Cannibal Adventure) are all fabulous reads for children, and an excellent way for them to learn about wildlife. Underwater Adventure is one of the best of them. Heroes Hal and Roger are constantly at risk from dangerous animals, they can't seem to step into a puddle without being attacked by a shark, but it is the human enemies that really make their adventures so exciting. In Underwater Adventure they have a particularly sinister and Machiavellian baddie to deal with. The scene with the giant clam still makes me shiver!
