My Defacto Tire Choice (updated review)

Dec 2021 Update:It has been a couple of years since I started using the Conti 5000 tires and I feel it is time to update this review and rating. I originally gave the 5000 tires a three star rating when they came out because the were about "one size" narrower than the 4000s tires I had been running for a number years (both the original and " 4000s II" versions).I still run Conti tires (Grand Prix 5000 "standard"...not TR or TL) on all three road bikes. I like the ride quality as well as the low rolling resistance based on some testing results available on the web. I also feel the tires have very good grip for the typical road surfaces I ride on (asphalt roads, cement bike trails). I can't speak to the wet road performance since I live in a dry climate. As for flat resistance, I can't say I notice any stark improvement in flat resistance -- but this is a tough one to accurately quantify based on real world experience. I still get flats occasionally, but don't feel they are any worse than any high performance other tire would be.The only downside to these tires is that they can be very expensive. If you rarely ride or budget is a concern, you might check around for a different tire.In a nutshell, I'm still a Conti fan and love the tires, so I've bumped the rating up to five stars. As for what widths I personally use, I'm running the 28mm 5000 tires on my Specialized Roubaix Pro. For the much heavier Co-motion Carrera tandem (Rolf Carbon Tandem wheels) I stick with the wider 32mm tires.Take note that the maximum tire pressure on the 5000 version is lower than the older 4000 tires, so check your sidewalls so you don't over inflate the tires.---- Original Three Star Review ----I'm a seasoned rider and a long time fan of Conti's 4000s tires, using them exclusively on my road bikes and and a Co-Motion tandem. I have run various widths from 23 to 28mm, with the tandem using the 28mm tires. I had ordered the new Conti 5000 (non tubeless) tires for the front/back of the tandem in a 28mm size, to replace the 28mm 4000s II tires already on there.Much to my disappointment, the new 5000 is much narrower than the old 4000s. I didn't realize it until I mounted the front tire and saw it was noticeably more narrow than the old tire on the rear. I have included two photos - the first is holding the two tires flat on top of each other to compare the width of the carcass itself (unmounted). The second shows the Conti 5000 mounted on a Rolf Carbon Tandem wheel. The caliper is set to the mounted width of the old 4000s tire so you can see the difference. At the time the photos were taken, all tires had 95 psi in them. In the end, the psi and rims won't make a difference, as the carcass is noticeably narrower than the old 4000s.The ride feels the same as the 4000s tires. However, I may pull these off the tandem (heavier bike) and use them on the road bikes. In the end, I may be looking for alternatives, although it might be hard to find something with a low rolling resistance and good grip.I think the Conti quality is still there. For some of you the width won't matter, for others, just be aware of the narrower profile over the old 4000s tires.

My new "go to" training and racing tire.

I've been a Schwalbe fan for years and a Schwalbe One Clincher fan in particular in both 25C & 28C. After reading a lot of reviews I decided to give the Continental GP 5000's a go despite the fact that I had some bad experiences with some gravel kings a few years back. Back to back on the same bike, wheels, tubes, pressures the GP5000 28C's are marginally faster over my well traveled training routes and they do in fact feel more "supple" vs. the Schwalbe One. After about 2,000 km of training rides over my usual routes they are showing no more/less wear vs. typical for the Ones and the cut/nick resistance seems to be better. I typically wash my tires after every ride (seldom <70km) and inspect and superglue any nicks/cuts before my next ride so I'm pretty rigorous on inspection and I do think these are less damage prone. I have had one flat doing a 135km ride on Mt. St. Helens, puncture on a sharp bit of debris but this was simply bad luck and would have punctured most anything I believe. From a handling perspective they inspire confidence, every bit as good if not better in cornering and braking vs. the One. I'm an aggressive descender and at 190cm, 95kg I really push cornering/braking limits and find the GP5000 grippy and predictable. I've not done a lot of riding with them in the wet but what I have done has been "no drama". Very impressed with these really and have already bought another set in 25C for another set of wheels. Highly recommended.

Awesome Tire

I had been riding on several brands of tires (over the years) and thought I would give them a try (Continental 5000.) First I have a Orbea Orca which I have had for several years. I bought two tires 28 for the front and rear and found that I could only put a 25 on the front and the 28 on the rear. I said what the hell I really could not make that much of a difference. Well I was very very suprised!! The bike rode much smoother (Much) and the speed has increased! I felt like I had a totally different bike! The tires handled soo much better and again the ride was soo much smoother regardless of the road. I had been riding on 23s for years, But I found that the tires with a lower pressure (95) and larger circumfrence did the trick. I have not put too many miles on so I cannot speak for longevity (will see how that goes.) But so far I would definitely recommend this tire!!

Glad I waited for these to go Tubeless on my road bike.

These are great tires! Had no problems getting these on my Hunt 50 Carbon wheels. The other guy saying these are trash because he can’t get them on sounds like user error to me. Tubeless tires aren’t supposed to just glide on like a clincher. Took me about 10 minutes per tire including injecting the sealant. Anyway, I’ve got about 750 miles on these already with no problems. There is a positive difference in ride quality from the 4000II’s. The biggest thing I notice is the smoother ride quality. Being able to run lower pressure means more grip and better absorption on rough roads. I also bought some Stans Race Sealant and Genuine Innovations Tubeless Tire Plugs for flats. Haven’t had a flat yet but am prepared for when it comes. If you’re on the fence about going tubeless, these should take care of that. Conti coming thru with great product again!

Bike Came Alive!

Wow! Didnt think tires could make this much difference. Went from using 23c Bontrager Hard case that came on a BMC racer SL01 I bought used to these and made it completely different handling bike. 23c made the bike feel harsh and skittery, I had no fun on it. These made the bike "come alive" with much more confidence in turns and lower rolling resistance. Can't speak to longevity yet, but am riding way more because I enjoy it so worth any money to replace tires as needed. Only con is these are very hard to mount. Praying I don't need a roadside tube flat change before they stretch!!!!

Fast but puncture protection less than predecessor

In terms of rolling resistance this tyre is great. They're faster and grippier than the stock Rubino tyres that came with my bike.Puncture protection on the other hand was a big let down. On only my second ride I managed to get a flat from the tiniest bit of glass. Normally I'd ride around smashed glass but this was the only speck on the road so I didn't see it. It went straight through the tyre before I'd even realised what had happened.

Immediate punctures

I have bought two of these with the mistaken belief that investing a little more might have given me better speed and puncture protection. Within 5 weeks of use, the first one I got a hole in it (I was given a partial refund) but thought maybe I'd just been unlucky and I'd give them another go. Within 3 rides on the second one I developed another large hole. For some context I ride on well maintained roads in Central London. I've now bought a much cheaper one that has lasted longer with better performance.

GP5000 - Why tubeless tyres lose pressure

The media could not be loaded.  Ok, so after my last review about the Continental GP5000 tyres (punctured front within a mile), this morning I noticed that the front tyre was flat and the rear soft! I pumped them up again (tubeless tyres) and this time I put them into the dogs paddling pool. I have attached a video to show that they leak even with sealant in them! Not sure why this should happen, but I often hear of people saying their tyres lose pressure after a couple of days.My question is: Should a tubeless tyre be leaking so much through tiny holes when there is sealant in them??

So tight that they actually don't fit, they will cause damage

The worst tyre I have ever owned. So badly fitting that they took nearly an hour to install and seriously damaged my rims to remove after a puncture after less than a month. I have no issue with tight fit, use Gatorskins and Schwable Marathons and can fit both without tyre irons. But these foldables are utter crap. I've been riding many years and so have all of my friends, all who agreed when we were roadside trying to remove one last week. I've had GP4000 before and they were fine. These are just awful and I will never ever use them again. Don't bother unless you want to ruin your rims.....
