Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons (Blu-ray)

The most enjoyable DC film I've seen in years (animated or live action)
I confess, I put off watching this one, as I wasn't all that interested in the Super Sons. Turns out, I was a fool. This is quite possibly the best DC film I've seen since the old DCAU. Yesterday, I reviewed "Justice Society: World War II," saying that I was pleasantly surprised how decent it was after about a decade or so of animated films that are mediocre at best (not to mention a decade of DC live action films that barely qualify as mediocre, with perhaps the first "Wonder Woman" film being a notable exception, minus the third act). However, this "Super Sons" movie isn't "decent" or "pretty good" as I described the Justice Society film. This movie is hands-down excellent! It is a good old fashioned, traditional, feel-good superhero movie that we all thought wasn't even allowed to be made anymore. They even say "truth, justice, and the American way" without censoring or sarcastic cynicism. They say it sincerely and the story itself is sincere, as it drives home the importance of fathers in their sons' lives. And, believe it or not, this was made in 2022. Well done and highly recommended--especially for kids and families (something else that's barely allowed anymore). But this film does it.

The voice acting is also noteworthy, with talented actors bringing the characters to life and infusing them with personality and emotion. While Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons succeeds in many areas, it's important to note that some viewers may find the narrative formulaic or predictable. The film adheres to certain tropes and conventions of superhero storytelling, which may feel familiar to those well-versed in the genre. However, the strength of the characters and the exciting action sequences help overcome any shortcomings in the storytelling department.Overall, Batman and Superman: Battle of the Super Sons is a thrilling animated adventure that brings together beloved superheroes and introduces a new generation of heroes. Excellent Male-Driven Story
Excellent and relatively rare new male-driven superhero movie (Lois has a great part, too!). Yes, some of the tropes are predictable – the two super sons don’t click right away – but seeing their friendship begin was fun and refreshing. Superman and Batman also had good moments as superheroes, friends, and fellow dads, and yet remained in true Superman and Batman form throughout. The moments of Clark Kent as an engaging father were also good to see. This movie had a good story with plenty of action, and yet feels “warm” with the positive male representations and male relationships that aren’t as common in contemporary storytelling. Fantastic movie I didn’t realize I needed! Would love to see a TV or movie series featuring Damian and Jonathan as the lead characters, and with Superman and Batman as key support roles. If you’re looking for a fun superhero movie that also reinforces the male heart in a surprisingly warm way, this is it.

Captures the magic that made the comic so exceptional!
Peter Tomasi created a friendship dynamic that grew from two kids who couldn't be in the same room without getting in a fight, to two very different young people who realized that their differences made them stronger as a team. The Super Sons comic became a title that quickly went to the top of my reading stack each month, and if you've never read it, the omnibus is well worth the investment. Sadly, to move stories in new directions the characters, particularly Jonathan Kent, were aged up and the magic of this youthful friendship was lost. It is back, though, in this movie, which has laugh-out-loud moments, parents wrestling with letting their children begin to grow up, and lots of action. There is even an appearance of Bat Cow, (sorry if that's a spoiler), who actually played a role in the characters' early interactions in the comic, so it was spot on. This is the best of the most recent DC animated films, and it is worthy of repeated viewing.
