Philips Norelco Shaver 5400, Rechargeable Wet & Dry Shaver with Pop-Up Trimmer, S5880/81

I bought this to replace a 15+ year-old Philips Norelco 3-head shaver that had a dying rechargeable battery (not readily replaceable due to being soldered into its connections). I was also wanting to get a little closer shave than the old shaver was delivering, which was probably due to needing new blades in the heads. This shaver delivers a much-smoother shave, and much smoother skin (i.e., much closer shave). The size is somewhat larger than my old shaver, and I wish that it came with a protective pouch like the old one, but it handles very well, has great shaving results, and even the trimmer part cuts better and closer than the old model. This one also does not have a separate wall adapter, but instead comes with a USB (A type) cable for charging. If you have a built-in outlet with USB charging ports, you can just plug it in there. Otherwise, you need to provide a USB charging adapter, such as one from an old phone (like I am using) or sold for such purposes. Charging could also be done from a USB port in a car, airport, plane, etc., if you need to charge it while traveling. The shaving end has larger shave heads than my old one, and is said to be waterproof, so it could be used by those who shave larger surfaces, like heads or torsos or legs. Compared to the old model, the shaver is also much easier to clean, as the flip-open top has only a shallow, mostly-flat recess where the accumulated cut off hairs reside until removal. The lack of deep, hard-to-reach spaces means that it will not perpetually have fine hair bits down in deep holes, shaft holes, or corners in the head-support volume.

I originally purchased this electric razor to touch up my face in-between shaving with a razor blade and shaving cream because I figured that it wouldn't cut as close as a razor. I've been convinced otherwise. When I first switched this razor on, the quietness of it made me immediately think it would be a subpar shave...I couldn't have been more wrong. I hadn't shaved for days, so my stubble was pretty coarse and I worried that this razor would pull my whiskers for a painful shave. Nope, not at all. The heads glided across my face with ease, so much so that I thought I had not taken off some clear barely visible plastic on the heads. When I touched my face where I had just shaved, I literally said WOW out loud! PROS: - Shaves as close as a blade and leaves no razor burn - Does not pull or snag days old growth - Fast & efficient - saves a ton of time over shaving with a blade and cream - hipsters with shaving cream brushes need not purchase. CONS: - Hard to shave closely right under your nostrils like you can with the back of a Gillette blade cartridge- have to use the flip up trimmer, but it's still not close as a blade there Sometimes I hit the power button while shaving and it turns the razor off - not sure if engineers can find a way of placing the power button down lower towards the power plug input, but it could be just me who hits it unintentionally. - I haven't had the razor long enough to comment on durability, but initial quality is exceptional. Well done Phillips Norelco, well done. If you're questioning yourself whether it's worth the money, IT IS!

UPDATE #2: I am generally happy with this product. However, for those who consider to buy it, please keep in mind that you need to remove the blades, and clean them thoroughly after each use. It takes around 4-5 minutes, but if you don't clean, the efficiency of the shaving drops significantly! I wish it had a better or faster way to clean those blades, but it is what it is. Because of this issue, I am dropping it to 4 stars. UPDATE: After using the product for a couple of months, I can confidently say that this is a great product. The battery lasts forever considering my usage. I believe, I only charged it twice so far but I had many shaves. Please keep in mind that if you don't clean the blades, it'll lose effectiveness! Since it's washable, I suggest at least once a week, wash the blades and let it dry. I still like the dry shaving more and my skin got used to the machine, but you have the option of wet shave. I will update again if I see something really bad. I was not expecting such a great quality, to be honest. I've been using palm shavers for my head, and I shave like 2-3 times a week. Every time I used my shaver, which is an affordable brand that I got from Amazon, I had skin burn. It doesn't bother too much but after shaving with Philips, I was so mad at myself for not buying it earlier. The design is very modern and useful. I liked the material. I have not tested the longevity of the battery but from other reviews, I got the feeling that it lasts long enough. I had a dry shave and it was veeery smooth. Cleaning the blades was pretty easy. One of the cons I noticed was that it left hair under my chin and I had to go over and over. It caused a little skin irritation. That might be because I didn't shave with the right angle but I'll keep an eye on it. Another thing is I strongly suggest you shave for the first time when you'll stay inside. It's because your skin will need to adjust to the new shaver so it may get more red than usual. I'm very happy with this purchase and shaved my head very easily. I almost look like a sphynx cat or a lantern visible during the day lol. I strongly recommend this product to everyone.

Great shaver. Gives me a close, comfortable shave. At first I thought it wasn't powerful enough, but turns out it is very capable of giving a nice shave very easily. Cleans easily under running water. Have used for almost 2 years, and still going strong. Only needs recharged infrequently. And fast recharge.

Was a little concerned when I first received because of different size and shape to what I was used to. However, I think I like it more and more with every use. Clean, close shave, very quiet and very well satisfied.

Shaver works well, nice smooth shave. Easy to clean. Very pleased with it. Had slight delay in delivery due to a hold up at Customs, but seller helpful.
