Anyone who gets to fulfil their “dream of Venice” will be sure to remember one of the city’s most famous landmarks – the Rialto Bridge (Ponte di Rialto), the oldest bridge over the Canal Grande which links the two neighbourhoods of San Marco and San Polo. The bridge gets its name from the Rialto district in San Polo which, in centuries past, was regarded as the city’s most important trading area. “Rialto” is derived from the Italian “rivo alto” (high riverbank). From 1246 onwards, there had been a series of short-lived attempts to construct a wooden bridge here, until in 1588, under the Doge Pasquale Cicogna, the master builder and architect Antonio da Ponte came on the scene. His sandstone bridge, boasting a span of 48 m, a width of 22 m and an arch height of 7.50 m, was first approved for traffic on 20 March 1591. No fewer than 12,000 wooden piles driven into the ground enable the shop-lined Rialto Bridge to withstand the stresses and strains it still faces to this day, not least from the hordes of tourists keen to experience their very own “Venice moment”.
